Database utilities

The ZETNET database is a Microsoft Access compatible database named 'Zetnet.mdb' and is located in your installation directory. This database contains all the data relative to your account such as set-up information, mail and news etc.

Pack Database

Clicking on the 'Pack' button runs the mail/news expire process and makes a backup copy (Backup.mdb) before packing the main database. This manual facility is provided to allow you to pack the database if it has become too large, or if you have deleted a large number of items. However the procedure is carried out automatically on the first day of every month. If you do not run ZIMACS on the first day of each month it will simply postpone the auto-pack until you do - so you won't miss out :)

Note: The previous Backup.mdb will be moved to the Windows recycle bin.

Tip: Review the contents of the recycle bin and empty on a regular basis to minimise disk usage.

Check Database

Clicking the 'Check' button will check the database for inappropriate or incorrect entries. Should any be found then they will be removed. This may, in unusual circumstances, result in a database that is not useable. Please take a copy before running Check.

Repair Database.

In the event of your ZIMACS database being corrupted, clicking the 'Repair' button will attempt to correct the problem. This function should only be used if you are sure that the database has become corrupted.

Notes:

Packing creates a back-up copy of the main database (Backup.mdb) prior to processing. ZIMACS will try to verify that sufficient disk space is available and abort the pack operation if disk space is too low. Packing requires free space at least 3-4 times the size of your database.

Tip: ZIMACS processing may be significantly faster if the database is packed on a regular basis.

If the main database is damaged beyond repair then the Backup.mdb can be copied over to Zetnet.mdb to keep you running.

Tip: If the backup database fails then remember that a previous copy may exist in the recycle bin.

Should you decide to try and change or fix the database using Microsoft Access then you do so entirely at your own risk. Do *not* attempt to convert this database to a later Access format - it will may not be recognised by ZIMACS and cannot be converted back to an earlier format.
