Electronic mail
The ZIMACS mail screen consists of three listboxes, titled 'Authors', 'Subjects' and 'Copies Kept'. By clicking on the author a list of mail items associated with the selected author are listed by subject in the middle column. If you have 'Keep Copy' selected in the configuration program then any outgoing mail will be kept. It will only be shown in the right hand listbox if Kept Mail is checked on the Mail screen.
Tip:The relative size of the listboxes can be adjusted - place the mouse pointer in the blank area between the listboxes. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the boundary to the required position.
Tip: Placing the mouse cursor over a Kept item will show the subject.
Tip: Review Kept mail on regular basis and delete any that is no longer required.
Marking as read/unread and deleting.
By default all incoming email is marked as unread - i.e. it has an asterisk (*) next to its entry in the listbox. This simply means that you have not viewed the message. When you view the message it will be marked as read and the asterisk (*) will be removed. ZIMACS allows you to mark as read and as unread messages without having to view them first, this can be useful if you know what the message is about and don't want to read it, instead you can just flag it as read.
ZIMACS lets you mark all the messages from a single author, all the messages from multiple authors, individual messages or a selection of individual messages as read or as unread.
To mark a message as read, select the message and press 'R'.
To mark a message as unread, select the message and press 'U'.
Similar to marking as read/unread, you can select individual authors or multiple messages to delete. To delete a message or a selection of messages press the 'Delete' key.
Note: Once you have deleted the message it cannot be recovered unless the Deleted Items mailbox has been setup.
The Options Bar
The options bar (shown below) has been replaced in 2.20 by menu items at the top of the screen.
Menu bar
Mailbox
Click the Mailbox menu item to change from one mailbox to another. Select the new mailbox from the dropdown:
If you have not created any new mailboxes then the only selection available will be your default mailbox.
Note: Creating an extra mailbox within the Configuration program when you do not have one registered with Zetnet can cause problems with the database file and mail sent to an unregistered mailbox may be lost without trace. Please register it first then add it.
Tip: Alt+Up/Down arrow keys can be used to switch from one mailbox to another without using the menu bar.
New Item
This is equivalent to the New E-mail button in previous versions and will open a new e-mail.
Search
Received and kept mail can be searched by sender, message text etc. The search menu item is enabled when a mail item in either the received or kept columns is selected.
Reload
Click the Reload menu item to reload mail, this will refresh the display and remove any items flagged as .
View
The View menu item determines the order in which received and kept mail is displayed.
Options are as follows:
Unsorted
Mail will be displayed in the order in which it was received.
Newest first
The most recent messages will be shown at the top of the list.
Alphabetical
Mail will be sorted by the name of the sender. Note that this option is ignored if 'Newest first' is ticked.
Similar options are available for kept mail:
Note that Kept mail is only displayed in the right hand column if 'Show' is ticked.
Tip: Unchecking 'Show' does not remove Kept mail from the database - it only hides the list.
Tip: Highlight an author or subject and press the 'k' key to add to the kill file.
Tip: Keyboard shortcuts can be used instead of clicking menu items:
S(ort) by Sender on/off
A(lphabetical) on/off
N(ewest) first on/off
Alt+Up/down arrow cycles through mailboxes
