Hints and tips
The help file contains tips on using ZIMACS and associated programs. Some of these are reproduced here as a quick reference.
If processing is set to Auto or Selective and you need to re-process a packet restored from the PktSave directory, temporarily set packet processing to Manual. Alternatively wait until Zetcall downloads the next packet from the server.
Do not enable PktSave if available disk space is low or if large packets are received on a regular basis.
Enabling duplicate checking may slow down packet processing.
Review the contents of the recycle bin and empty on a regular basis to minimise disk usage.
ZIMACS processing may be significantly faster if the database is packed on a regular basis.
If the backup database fails then remember that a previous copy may exist in the recycle bin.
Review kept mail on a regular basis and delete any no longer required to minimise database size.
Unchecking the show kept mail box hides the display but does not delete kept mail from the database.
Placing the mouse cursor over a Kept mail item will show the subject.
A pale yellow background colour for the newsgroup name on a reply indicates that the article was cross posted to a number of newsgroups. Place the mouse pointer over the field to view the complete list.
The relative size of the listboxes on the main screen can be adjusted - place the mouse pointer in the blank area between the listboxes. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the boundary to the required position.
You can set a different signature for each mailbox in Zetset.
Pressing the middle mouse button when the mouse cursor is over the message body text in mail/news read will move to the next unread item.
The ZIMACS Option screen can be used to sign messages automatically.
Placing the mouse cursor over a mail or news item waiting to be sent will show the author name and subject.
Shift and click on a mail waiting to be sent if you would like the reply to be sent to a different address.
Right click on the sender address to bring up the kill file with the sender address in the Address box. Shift and right click on the subject to add it to the kill file.
Double click on the sender address to add it to the Address Book.
Double click on a URL to open it with your default browser.
When re-editing an e-mail from the main screen, use the options screen to retain the original sender id if you have more than one mailbox. If the option is not checked then the mail will be sent with the currently selected mailbox.
To remove an attachment from a new email, click on Edit/Remove Attachment and then select the file name.
The kill file can be configured to delete mail, news, both or nothing.
Highlight the author or subject in a main screen listbox and press k to add to the kill file without opening the item.
The Options screen can be used to enable a kill file log which tracks all deleted items.
The list of newsgroups that you subscribe to can be sorted into alphabetical order using the Options screen.
You can change the font name or colour for mail and news textboxes using Zetset.
Ctrl+Tab will tab across 3 characters if you need to indent text when editing a mail or news item.
Use the enhanced search facility for finding mail or news by author, by text within a message etc.
The Zetcall window can be dragged away from the default top left hand corner and will return to the last position when restarted. Re-positioning is easier on an Internet connect as the window will be visible for longer.
Using a proxy server may increase your effective download speed when downloading files from the web.
You can synchronise your PC clock with an external time server by clicking on the clock icon in the Zetcall toolbar - this is shown when connected in Internet mode only.
Double clicking an email address in the body of a mail or news item will open the Mail write screen.
Use the drop down arrow in the Subject box when creating a News post to show the list of subscribed groups. Double click on the group that you want to send to.
Alt+Up/Down arrow keys can be used to switch from one mailbox to another without using the menu bar.
Hold the shift key and click the send icon to save a new message as a draft, it will not be sent.
