How do I use the PktView utility to retrieve deleted email and news items? If you do not understand the system of email and news items used by ZIMACS, it is suggested that you read this page first. The main use of the Pktview utility is to retrieve email and news items that have either been deleted or killed by the killfile, but to do this you must ensure that the Enable Packet Save option is ticked in the General page of ZIMACS setup. If the option is not enabled, you will be unable to retrieve items that were received prior to enabling the option. To run the utility, double click the file called pktivew.exe in your ZIMACS folder. A window similar to the following will appear. ![]() The top-left box lists all available zets. The name of each zet file gives an indication of when it was created; the first two digits give the day of the month and the remaining six the time of creation. For example, the file 05194602.zet was created on the fifth of the month, at 19:46.02. If you doubleclick a zet file, you will be able to see any mail (.mal) and news (.new) items it contains. If you then select a mail or news item, you will be able to read it in the window at the bottom. To retrieve an item, drag the mal or new file from the top left box to the top right box marked "to be restored:". When you have moved all the items you want to, click the Restore button to return them to the ZIMACS database. Please note that if the item was originally killfiled, it will be killed again upon restoration if you have not altered your killfile settings. |
